String Art
Thread art is characterized by an arrangement of coloured thread strung between points to form geometric patterns or representational designs such as a ship's sails, sometimes with other artist material comprising the remainder of the work. Thread, wire, or string is wound around a grid of nails hammered into a velvet-covered wooden board. Though straight lines are formed by the string, the slightly different angles and metric positions at which strings intersect gives the appearance of Bézier curves. Quadratic Bézier curve is obtained from strings based on two intersecting segments. Other forms of string art include Spirelli, which is used for cardmaking and scrapbooking, and curve stitching, in which string is stitched through holes.
CaratLane & String Art
This string art inspired jewellery collection of Caratlane is a 3-D print technique based collection. This technique and the inspiration compliment each other in terms of detailing and design. The form and structural inspiration being from string art focus on the details like lines and the playfulness of lines like criss-cross line, weaving lines thick to thin lines and much more. The 3D print technique would not only reduce the gold weight of the product by a lot it would also give the product a bolder and crisp look. 3 D print enables us to think more in terms of design variations which are usually a limitation when we work in the traditional manner. Details like intricacy, gold weight, stone setting, and price points become a barrier more than just constraints. With 3D print as a technique, we can go wild in terms of design thinking and its application as minute details and dimension details can be easily achieved in this technique.
